As yesterday’s news sinks in, we are now planning for the future. The Committee met last night in what was billed as crisis session but in fact the mood was almost entirely upbeat and positive, inspired by the more than 50 messages of support that came in yesterday and overnight – ranging from current and past members all the way to our local MP. The main thing we want to get across now is that the courts are fine so play WILL continue.
In that spirit, we have organised a few things for this weekend. First and most important, on Sunday we will have clubplay from MIDDAY (earlier start than usual as play will have to stop at about 5.45 when it gets dark). We have the use of the cricket club’s pavilion (at the top of the bank by the side of court 2) so come and meet there and we will arrange play as normal. Please use our car park which is also fine. If you only come to one clubplay this year (which I hope you won’t), please make this the one.
At 2pm on Sunday we will stop for a short open meeting at the cricket club where we will let you know what we do about the fire and what our plans are for the immediate future. We’ve had lots of ideas to provide extra court time (e.g. rearranging all our matches to be played away from home), so you can hear about those and make your own suggestions.
We will also be unveiling plans for one of the most exciting events we have ever staged – a chance on Monday 6 May (bank holiday) for members to be on court at Camber with an ex-Great Britain international and Davis Cup player. We have decided that this will be completely FREE to members as a thank you for your continued support. There are 36 places available, it will be first-come first-served, and Sunday is your first chance to sign up, so don’t miss it.
When the light goes on Sunday we will have a gathering at the cricket club where the bar will be open and everyone is encouraged to bring some food along – whatever you fancy, a quiche, some cake, a salad, some baking potatoes or whatever. The cricket club’s bar will be open.
Last but not least, on Saturday night from 8pm we will have some space reserved in The Rose pub on Forest Hill Road (just south of Peckham Rye Park) where we will have a few drinks and stage the quiz which we were going to have in the clubhouse. Please come along – everything helps to keep the Camber community going.
Again, thanks for your continued support – the future starts here.
